Getting Started on the Path to Counseling
Making the decision to seek counseling may be a big step in your life. Here is a bit about what you can expect to help you feel more at ease.
Ongoing appointments are generally 50 minutes long and are usually held at the same time each week. This regularity helps us get to know each other and provides a structure for us to begin tackling the issues you are struggling with. Regular and consistent appointments are one of the keys to doing this work well, but let's talk and see what fits you best. The important thing is that you feel like you are making the choices that work for you.
The First Appointment...
During our first session we'll discuss what's going on for you and how we can work together. I'll invite you to tell me about yourself and to let me know what brings you to counseling. Once you feel that I understand your particular needs and what you want me to know about yourself, we’ll talk about approaches to counseling to see what really fits for you. I'll also tell you more about the work I do so that you can better assess if I'm the right counselor for you. It usually takes a few sessions to figure out if a counselor is a good match, but it's also possible that you'll know in the first session.
the first few sessions we may still be figuring out if my approach is
what you want (for more info on my approaches look at the "About Dave" page). That's
just fine. I for one want to make sure that you are working with the right person. Sometimes those seeking counseling try out 2 or 3 therapists before settling on the right fit. I want to support you in that process. Assuming that we continue, early in our work together we'll come up with goals, keeping in mind that they may change in the course of our work. As we work, I may at times be active with you as we address particular emotions, behaviors and personal history. At other times we may be more actively led by you. Laughing, crying, zoning out, insights, discomfort, excitement, and sighs of relief may be part of what happens, however everyone has their own process. Also, we will regularly check in about the quality of my work with you to make sure that I'm getting things right. Most importantly, you should know that however we decide to do this work, you will always have my complete attention and dedication during our time together.
My fee is $135 with a limited number of sliding scale appointment slots. I accept Medicaid and BC/BS. and can bill out of network for many plans. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me. I truly look forward to hearing from you.
